Inexperienced ministers-designate; Senate assails govt

Jan 13, 2015 - 19:52

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some members of the Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon -- or upper house of the parliament -- on Tuesday said the president and CEO had nominated inexperienced and non-professional people with dual nationality as ministers.

More than 105 days after its inauguration, the unity government on Monday finally announced a long-awaited list of 27 ministers-designate, National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) and Afghanistaninfo-icon Bank heads.

Among the ministers-designate, the youngest is 37 years old and the eldest 70 years old. Ages of three nominees are less than 40 years.

Nisar Ahmad Haris, a lawmaker from Kabul, said the unity government had been unable to introduce qualified and committed individual as cabinet members in more than three months.

He added some ministers had two or more nationalities while others did not have enough experience. The choice for hajjinfo-icon and religious affairs had been the host of a television talk show, he remarked.

Sher Mohammad Akhunzada, a public representative from southern Helmand province, said the authorities had set little store by experience and qualifications while nominating the cabinet.

He asked the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon to reject “undeserving” ministers-designate because they did not have the capability to guide the country to progress and prosperity.

Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said the government had named the cabinet under immense pressure from the people and civil societyinfo-icon organisations. It was the responsibility of the lower house to accept or reject the cabinet picks, he observed.
