Reconstructed Gardez-Khost highway inaugurated

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Gardez-Khost highway was on Tuesday inaugurated after its reconstructioninfo-icon at a cost of $232 million from the US government, a minister said.

The road was reconstructed in two parts, one part was executed by the Louis Berger Group / Black & Veatch, a US company, and the second by Mashriq Construction Company, an Afghan company, Public Works Minister Mahmud Baleegh told a press conference here.

The 101 kilometres long and nine metre wide road connects Gardez, the capital of Paktia, with Khost City, the capital of Khost province, and connects to the road leading to Gulam Khan dry port between Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon, he said.

The first part of the road which was 63-km had been constructed by the US company four years ago and the second part, 38-km, was constructed by the Afghan company, he said.

A total 410 small bridges and 25-km protection walls have been constructed along the 55 km portion in Paktia and 46 km in Khost, he said, adding the projects would help improve economic and security situation in the two provinces.

The project was completed at a cost $232 million funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAIDinfo-icon), the minister said, asking local residents to help preserve the road’s condition.
