KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon army chief General Raheel Sharif on Sunday arrived in Kabul for talks with the Afghan leadership on border management and reviving the stalled peace talks with the Talibaninfo-icon.

Gen. Sharif will meet President Ashraf Ghani and other civil as well as military leaders during his day-long trip.

Pakistan Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said Gen. Sharif had gone to Kabul “with all the sincerity and optimism for better border management and peace process in Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

On Saturday, Chief Executive Officer’s deputy spokesman Javed Faisal told Pajhwok Afghan News Gen. Raheel Sharif would hold separate meetings with President Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah.

At meetings with Raheel, issues related to the revival of peace talks and trust-building between Islamabad and Kabul would come under discussion, he said.

He said the trip of Pakistan’s military chief was part of fresh pledges Islamabad had made during the recent Heart of Asia-Istanbul process conference.

Gen. Raheel is visiting Kabul after President Ghani visited Islamabad this month for Heart of Asia conference and met senior leaders, leading to thaw in tense bilateral ties.

Gen. Sharif last time visited Kabul with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in May and that led to first round of talks between Afghan government and Taliban in July.
