ALP commander held over supplying arms to Taliban

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): An Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander has been detained over alleged cooperation with Talibaninfo-icon militants in northeastern Takhar province, an official said on Thursday.

Maj. Abdul Khalil Asir, the provincial police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the ALP commander was detained in Darqad district on Wednesday.

The ALP commander was caught red-handed in Kokchi area supplying weapons and bullets to the rebels from Taloqan city, the provincial capital, to Darqad district.

Asir said the detainee, who led a 20-memember ALP squad, wanted to supply two Kalashnikovs with10 magazines and 500 bullets to a Taliban’s shadow governor, Maulviinfo-icon Nasrullah.    

The detained commander, in preliminary questions, had confessed to having links with the militants.

A resident of Darqad district, Tahir Khan, said several men had joined the Taliban after being tortured by ALP torturing forces. Instead of providing security to people, the ALP forces used to harass them, he said.
