Feb 11, 2017 - 22:14

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): An angry mob snatched a couple from a government department and killed them over elopement in the Wama district of eastern Nuristan province on Saturday, an official said.

Nuristan womeninfo-icon’s affairs director Zahida Faizan told Pajhwok Afghan News the slain woman was a resident of Nogram district. She was married a month ago, but a man from Wama district yesterday visited the woman and brought her with him to the Wama district centre.

The district officials, who arrested the couple, wanted to resolve the matter through a jirgainfo-icon on Saturday, but relatives of the girl stormed the district building and snatched the couple away. The district building’s doors were also damaged in the attack.

The mob lynched the couple in public despite intelligence officials’ efforts to rescue them, the women’s affairs director said.

Nuristan governor Hafiz Abdul Qayum confirmed the incident and said it was being investigated.

The provincial council head, Maulviinfo-icon Inayat Rahman, said both the woman and the man were taken out of the district building. First the woman was stoned to death and then the man was gunned down at a distance from the first incident.
