Rain threatens to flood 20 Nimroz villages

Rain threatens to flood 20 Nimroz villages

Feb 23, 2017 - 18:55

ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Continuous rainfall has increased the flood threat for 20 villages in southwestern Nimroz province where 20 homes and 50,000 acres of arable land have been submerged, officials said on Thursday.

Mohammad Fazli, the administrative head for Chakhansor district, said two days of raining triggered floods that caused financial losses to people and inundated roads leading to 20 villages.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the Natural Disasters Response Committee and the Afghan Red Crescent Societyinfo-icon (ARCS) office in Nimroz had distributed tents, blankets, breads and dates to the affected people in reachable areas.

However, he said the aid was not enough and aid organizations had been requested to provide more assistance to the marooned people.

Eng. Abdul Aziz, acting public works director, said his department’s personnel were busy unblocking roads for transportation of aid and rescuing people.

Khodai Nazar, a resident of Abdullah village, said: “Last night’s floodwater flowed down our village and washed away all homes and only one home stayed intact in the village. People’s homes were destroyed by a flooded Khashrud River last year as well.”

Locals had many times asked the government and other organizations to build a protective wall along the river’s banks near their villages, but no heed was paid, he lamented.
