KANDAHAR/MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): At least 20 militants were killed in airstrikes by NATOinfo-icon forces in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, local officials said.

Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News the airstrikes were carried out in Lam locality between Nesh and Khakrez districts.

The 20 militants killed in the airstrikes were preparing to storm the Nesh district, the police spokesman said, adding the operations in Nesh had been successful.

Elsewhere in the provincial capital, Kandahar city, one policeman was killed and another was injured in a rebel attack in the limits of the fourth municipal district.

In the Khakrez district, three children were injured when a hand grenade they were playing with inside a police officer’s home exploded, a security official said.

In northern Balkh province, police have detained 10 suspected criminals during a series of operations, provincial police spokesman Syed Kamal Sadat told a press conference in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

He said the detainees included five alleged car-lifters who had recently been released from jail. Among the suspects three were accused of extortion.

Sadat said police had rescued a person from his kidnappers in Chahar Bolak district. No one was arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
