MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Special security measures have been put in place for celebrating the upcoming new solar yearinfo-icon and the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony in northern Balkh province, local officials said on Thursday.

Every year, the Janda-i-Bala (flag-hoisting) ceremony, marking Nawroz, is being held in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of the province. The event is attended by thousands of citizens and government officials from across the country.

Balkh police chief, Maj. Gen. Syed Kamal Sadaat, told Pajhwok Afghan News despite the current security challenge, the Nawroz festival would be conducted in a befitting and peaceful manner.

Meanwhile, the provincial police spokesman, Shirjan Durani, said a proper special security plan had been devised and its implementation was ongoing for the solar year 1396. The plan involves the Afghan National Police (ANP), Afghan National Army (ANA) and other security forces.

Durani added five rings of steel and security posts had been set up around the city, with all routes to the provincial capital placed under surveillance.

All roads and streets leading to the city would also be watched by the security organs. Security for the celebration of Nawroz was being tightened, he continued.

He said no vehicle would be allowed to ply roads two kilometers from the venue and searching of cars had already been launched at rings of steel.
