KABULinfo-icon CITY (Pajhwok): A Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon or upper house’s delegation on Tuesday said the March 8 attack on the military hospital in Kabul was impossible without support from security officials deputed there.

The delegation members said security personnel who were on duty at the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital in the heavily-fortified diplomat enclave of Kabul on the day “didn’t appear for interrogation.”

On March 8, heavy armed individuals stormed the 400-bed hospital, killing 49 people and wounding another 50. However, some Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon members put the toll at 170 dead and more than 150 wounded.

Daesh militant group or Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the savage attack while the Talibaninfo-icon have denied involvement.

Mohammad Hashim Alokozai, who heads the Senate Jirgainfo-icon commission on security and defence affairs, told Tuesday’s general session that the delegation visited the hospital to investigate the nature of the attack and discussed it with patients and doctors.

Alokoza, who headed the delegation, said they also monitored the incident area and the ways through which the assailants entered the hospital. “The incident occurred due to dereliction of duty by some security personnel at the hospital; because without support from security operatives, the entry of attackers into the hospital with explosives and ammunition was impossible. “

He said though the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the hospital authorities had been informed about the fact-finding mission’s visit to the hospital,  however security personnel at the hospital didn’t appear before the delegation.

According to him, only the medical staff met the investigative team and they too refused to provide details about the assault. “They didn’t answer our questions, they just repeatedly what we had already heard.”

He said the hospital medical staff informed the attack had been plotted in three months and the assailants had the hospital’s map.

Alokozai said about 11 suspects, including doctors and security personnel, had so far been arrested in connection with the attack and they were currently under interrogation.

The Meshrano Jirga commission head stressed prosecution of security personnel who had committed negligence and who were unable to thwart and prevent the attack. “Until the punishments and reward system is implemented in a proper manner, we will experience such incidents every day.”

The upper house during its Sunday’s session decided to summon the ministers of defence and interior and the National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) chief next Sunday over the attack.
