Taliban no longer our brothers, declares Karzai

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former president Hamid Karzai on Sunday surprised many as he called for the first the Talibaninfo-icon as an insurgent group and said he would no longer see the insurgents as ‘brothers.’

Karzai, who throughout his government, had been calling the Taliban as disgruntled brothers of the Afghans.

But the shift in his stance comes two days after the Taliban killed 135 Afghan soldiers in the single deadliest attack on the Afghan National Army’s (ANA) 209 Shaheen Army Corps base in northern Balkh province.

As the Afghan nation mourned the attack in Mazar-i-Sharif, Karzai said the Taliban took orders from outsiders and their latest atrocity had widened the wounds of the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The former president said anyone who posed threats to Afghanistan and killed innocent civilians were terrorists.

Karzai believed sustainable peace in Afghanistan was linked to cooperation of the US and Pakistaninfo-icon. The Afghans could win peace if they acted as a unified nation, he said.
