Beijing, Kabul agree on Silk Road fiber optic networks

BEIJING (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon and China have signed two agreements under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative on building two trans-regional optic fiber networks.

The Afghan Embassy in Beijing signed the two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on behalf of the Afghan Telecom with China Telecom.

One of the agreements is about developing strategic partnership between the two national telecom companies, including the building of Kashgar-Faizabad Fibre Optic Cable system.

The second MoU was signed on building a four-nation ---China-Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan --- Silk Road Fibre Optic Cable that will be extended to other countries in the region in future.

The two MoUs were endorsed at the High Economic Council chaired by President Ashraf Ghani in Kabulinfo-icon yesterday.

The projects will further deepen Afghanistan's connectivity with the region and facilitate closer regional connectivity through Afghanistan, the Afghan Embassy in Beijing said in a statement.
